Trigger

Trigger was my brindle, four year old dachshund. He was nearly two feet long and about nine inches tall, which classified him as a standard sized dachshund. We got Digger in Oakdale, California, in a rodeo from a young teenager who was giving a litter away, on October 11, 2011, when he was only about two months old.

He loved to take long walks and drives, hunt birds and rabbits, going to the beach, and eating. His routine consisted of waking up early in the morning to run around the yard with my other dogs, and sitting down in the middle of the yard at night to howl for about half an hour. Unfortunately, he passed away in November of 2015.

About

Hi, I’m Cynthia!

I am a fourteen year old freshman at Gonzales High School. I’m passionate about animals, including dogs, goats, and horses- dachshunds in specific. As I have to create a website for my computer science class, I chose to write about hound dogs; my site is about three different hound dog breeds and three of my personal dogs. I got my first dachshund when I was around seven years old, and since then, my family an I have grown to love ” wiener dogs”.

My Dogs

Lexie

Lexie is my nearly nine-month old dog, born on April 15, 2018. She is a red female dachshund who loves playing with her raccoon stuffed animal, stealing food from my niece and I, chase my chickens, goats, or other dog around, or simply bark and run away from people. She’s an energetic, crazy, stubborn, and smart dog, who has the fastest little legs that I have ever seen.

I got Lexie on July 14, 2018, in the summer. When I got her, she was only two months old, almost three; she seemed to be a sweet, quiet, and innocent dog when I first met her, although for the most part now, she is not quiet or innocent, occasionally sweet. She was born in Madera, California and has three younger siblings, all male- she is the oldest of her litter. Today, she is about five inches tall and over a foot long.

Digger

Digger was my two year old black and tan dachshund. At about 16 inches at the withers, and eight inches tall, he was considered a standard sized dachshund. Digger was born on February 16,2016 in Pomona,L.A., California, a long with three others, two males and one female. I got Digger on May 7,2016 when he was nearly three months old.

Sleeping on my bed, hunting birds, eating people’s food, and taking long drives as well as walks were all of his favorite things to do. He loved taking long drives because his the strong winds would push his long ears back- the sight and smells of the places we would pass by would always excite him. Unfortunately, Digger passed away on November 04,2018, at nearly three years old.

Basset Hounds · Hound Dogs

History of Basset Hounds

Basset hounds were originally bred in France and Belgium. Bassets were “developed” throughout the 1500’s. The Friars of the Abbey of St. Hubert’s have been thought to be the ones responsible for “crossing strains of older French breeds to create a low built scenting hound.” This breed was especially favored during the 16-19th centuries, as hunting in France was popular in these times; these dogs were “ favored in the kennels of aristocrats and other nobility”.

The first Basset Hounds in the United States were reported to have been owned by George Washington, which were given to him by the Marquis de Lafayette(after the American Revolution). Seven Bassets were “attracted” to the first Basset field trail on October 24, 1937, which was associated with the Basset Hound Club of America, later creating a larger population of well-trained Bassets in the U.S.

Main Purpose of Breed

A Basset Hound’s main purpose is considered to be to hunt hares. As of today, they have also been taught to track and hunt other animals, including: rabbits, foxes, squirrels, deer, badgers, and raccoons. These dogs have an amazing sense of smell as well as tracking abilities, therefore, “ In trailing ability, the accuracy of the Basset’s nose makes him second only to the Bloodhound”.

Certain records have proved that Bassets are great at hunting in packs, obedience, tracking, and field trials. To help make these dogs great at hunting, they have certain features that are purposeful while hunting. The purpose for their long ears are to help pick up scents from the ground. Their loose skin creates wrinkles by the head, which catch other scents. Their white- tipped tail is important because while hunting in long grass, they are easier to be spotted by the hunters.

Size/Weight/Lifespan

The height of this breed has been recorded to not exceed 14-15 inches. The males are 12-15 in.(30-38 cm) tall, whereas, females are 11-14 in.(28-36 cm) in height. As they have heavy bones and a rather large body structure, Bassets tend to weigh at least around 50 lbs. Females range from 45-60 lbs(20-27 kg). Males weigh from 50-65 lbs(23-29 kg).

A Basset’s lifespan ranges from 10 to 12 years. Common diseases/illnesses that this breed may have include: obesity, patellar luxation, elbow dysplasia, canine hip dysplasia, and glaucoma. Otitis externa ( chronic inflammation in the ear canal), entropion (abnormal eyelids), as well as Von Willebrand’s Disease ( bleeding disorder), are several health problems that are more dangerous, which a Basset Hound may be diagnosed with.

Color/Coat Patterns

Basset hounds’ coats are quite similar to those of a Beagle. Their coats may variate from six different colors, including: black & white, brown & white, lemon & white, black & brown, red & white, or tri-color. Bassets often have markings on their coats, making them unique. Some markings found on Basset Hounds are: black markings, white markings, a black “mask”, or tickings.

This dog breed may have two different cost types; short-haired and long-haired coats, however, long-haired basset hounds are quite rare. Another rarity seen in the coat of a Basset, are lemon and white colors. Although according to the American Kennel Club, all coat colors in a Basset Hound are acceptable,  there are certain colors in a Basset Hound that are possible, but not favored. For example, “grey”(or blue) Basset’s are usually considered undesirable because this color is thought to be ” associated with genetic problems”.

Dachshunds · Hound Dogs

History Of Dachshunds

The dachshund breed originated from Germany, where they were called “Teckel”. Since the 1950’s, Dachshunds have mostly always been among the top 10 most popular dog breeds in the United States. These hound dogs were first bred in the U.S. in the 1870’s, and since then,  their population has grown outstandingly. However, the population of dachshunds, often referred to as “weiner dogs” or “hot dogs”, dramatically decreased throughout WWI, as they were used to “ depict Germany in many wartime propaganda pieces in the U.S., England, and France.

The development of this breed began in the 17th century in Germany. As they began to further develop, two different sizes of this breed were created. The standard size doxies were bred to hunt badgers and wild boar. The miniature-sized dachshunds were bred to hunt hares and foxes.

Dachshunds · Hound Dogs

Main Purpose of Breed

In German language, the word “dachshund” means badger hound; “dachs” means badger, whereas “hund” means hound. They were given this name as they were originally specifically bred to hunt badgers, however now, they are also used to hunt rabbits/hares, foxes, and certain other “burrow-dwelling animals.”

Dachshunds have a certain body structure that may assist them while hunting underground. They have short legs to help them burrow deep into the earth, large, paddle-shaped paws to help them dig holes to catch prey, and a deep chest to “allow enough lung capacity to keep going when hunting.” Most importantly, they have a large, long, and narrow nose to “increase the area that absorbs odors”.
